Virgin Mary non-alcoholic tomato cocktail

Virgin Mary comes together as the non-alcoholic version of the classic Bloody Mary of tomato juice, lemon, and Worcestershire sauce. You combine chilled tomato juice, lemon juice, and Worcestershire in a pitcher, then add Tabasco, grated horseradish, celery salt, and pepper. You pour it into ice-filled glasses and stir. You garnish with a celery stalk, a lemon slice, and olives, and serve right away.

Step by step process

Preparing the Glasses

  1. 1

Chill four tall highball or collins glasses in the freezer for at least ten minutes. Cold glasses keep the Virgin Mary cocktail cold longer after pouring and slow down ice melting.

  2. 2

Wash the lemon, cut one into four slices for garnish, and squeeze the juice from the rest. Strain through a fine sieve so no pulp or seeds get into the cocktail.

Mixing the Cocktail

  1. 3

Pour the chilled tomato juice into a large pitcher, add the freshly squeezed lemon juice and Worcestershire sauce. Stir thoroughly with a long bar spoon.

  2. 4

Add Tabasco, finely grated fresh horseradish, celery salt, and a pinch of freshly ground black pepper. Stir again thoroughly and taste. Adjust the heat with more Tabasco or salt to your liking.

  3. 5

Fill each chilled glass with a full handful of ice cubes and carefully pour the prepared mixture to the rim, ensuring each serving has a balanced flavor.

Serving

  1. 6

Garnish each glass with a fresh celery stalk tucked into the ice, place a lemon slice on the rim, and thread two green olives onto a cocktail pick laid across the glass.

  2. 7

Serve immediately, ideally with a bottle of Tabasco and Worcestershire sauce on the table so each guest can adjust the heat to their taste.

More tips:

For a richer flavor, use a good-quality thick tomato juice such as passata rather than diluted juice. The cocktail will have a silkier texture and a deeper tomato base.
