Step by step process

Preparation

  1. 1

Prepare 4 old-fashioned glasses and fill them with fresh ice to chill before mixing the drink.

  2. 2

Wash the orange well, use a sharp knife to cut a wide strip of peel without the white pith, and set it aside for garnish.

    TIP:

When zesting orange peel, remove only the thin colored layer and avoid the white pith. Then twist the peel briefly over the glass or press it gently to release the essential oils and give the drink a more pronounced aroma.

  3. 3

Put the remaining ice into a mixing glass and measure gin, Campari, and red vermouth in a 1:1:1 ratio.

Stirring

  1. 4

Stir the contents of the mixing glass thoroughly for about 20-30 seconds so the cocktail cools well and gently dilutes as the ice melts.

  2. 5

Strain through a fine sieve into the prepared glasses with fresh ice so the drink stays clear and free of small ice shards.

Serving

  1. 6

Hold the orange peel over the drink and twist it to release the essential oils. rub it on the rim of the glass and drop it into the drink.

  2. 7

Serve immediately chilled as an elegant aperitif.

More tips:

Use the largest ice cubes possible. the drink will stay colder longer and dilute more slowly.

The Negroni is a stirred cocktail: do not shake it so it remains clear.
