Microwave Oatmeal

Jakub SýkoraSweetCzech Cuisine x se líbilo
Microwave oatmeal is a breakfast that is ready before the tea has even brewed. You tip the oats into a bowl, pour over the milk and in a few minutes you have a warm breakfast with no dirty pot and no standing at the stove. Sweeten it with honey, then add sliced banana and a pinch of fragrant cinnamon on top. On a morning when you have neither the time nor the energy, you solve it with a single turn of the dial.

Step by step process

Preparation

  1. 1

For the microwave oatmeal, reach for a large, deep bowl, ideally twice as roomy as the portion itself. Milk rises fast as it heats and in a small dish it easily boils over the rim.

  2. 2

Tip in the oats, pour in the milk and add a spoonful of honey. Salt only lightly. Stir briefly so the oats soak evenly and the honey dissolves.

Cooking in the microwave

  1. 3

Put the bowl in the microwave and run it at full power for 90 seconds. Do not cover it. The milk needs to breathe, otherwise it boils over and spills onto the floor of the oven.

    TIP:

Heat milk or cream slowly over low heat, keeping it just below the boiling point. As soon as steam and tiny bubbles appear around the edges, lower the heat or remove it from the stove. It will stay smooth and won’t scorch.

  2. 4

Take the bowl out and stir the contents thoroughly. Return it for another 60 to 90 seconds and watch through the glass. As soon as the surface starts to rise sharply, crack the door open for a moment. The pressure drops and the boil settles down.

  3. 5

Let the finished dish rest for 1 minute so the oats absorb the rest of the milk and thicken nicely. If it turns out too stiff, stir in a little cold milk.

    TIP:

The right porridge is smooth, gently stretchy, and free of lumps. Through gradual cooking, it develops a tender texture that is neither too thin nor too thick, which you can easily check with a spoon or by watching how it flows along the bottom of the pot.

  4. 6

Slice the banana into rounds and arrange them on top. Dust with a pinch of cinnamon. Serve the warm portion straight from the bowl while it is still good and hot.

More tips:

Instead of honey you can sweeten it with maple syrup or a mashed ripe banana, which adds sweetness even without any added sugar.

For a creamier result use fine rolled oats. Steel-cut oats keep a chewier texture and work well when you like a heartier breakfast.
