Hot Toddy with Whisky and Honey
Ingredients
Step by step process
Preparation
- 1
Bring water to a boil in a kettle and prepare four thick-walled mugs or heatproof glasses suitable for hot drinks.
- 2
Rinse the mugs with hot water to warm them, then pour it out. A preheated mug will keep the drink hot longer and prevent the glass from cracking when it comes into contact with boiling liquid.
- 3
Squeeze the juice from one lemon (you need approximately 60 ml) and slice another lemon into four thin rounds to use as a garnish on the rim of each glass.
Mixing the Drink
- 4
Place 2 cloves and a piece of cinnamon stick in each warm mug to give the drink a spiced aroma and flavor.
- 5
Pour 50 ml of Scotch whisky into each mug and add 1 heaping tablespoon of honey. Stir the honey slowly into the whisky until it is completely dissolved.
- 6
Add 15 ml of freshly squeezed lemon juice to each mug to balance the sweetness of the honey and enhance the aromatic whisky.
- 7
Top each mug with approximately 150 ml of hot water (not at a full boil, let it cool slightly first) so the alcohol in the whisky does not evaporate too much and the flavor remains full.
Serving
- 8
Gently stir the drink with a spoon to combine all the ingredients and allow the spices to begin releasing their aroma.
- 9
Hang a lemon slice on the rim of each mug and garnish with a star anise, or let a piece of cinnamon stick protrude from the glass as a stirrer.
- 10
Serve immediately while still hot and sip slowly, Hot Toddy is a traditional warmer for cold winter evenings and a time-honored remedy for colds.
More tips:
Instead of Scotch whisky, you can use bourbon for a sweeter, more vanilla-forward flavor, or Irish whiskey for a smoother and rounder profile.
Do not bring the water to a full boil, the ideal temperature is around 80 °C (175 °F), otherwise the alcohol will evaporate from the whisky and the drink will lose its characteristic flavor.
