Cheesy Hot Dog
Ingredients
Step by step process
Preparation
- 1
Peel the onion and finely chop it. Cut the pickled cucumbers lengthwise into thin slices.
- 2
Split the buns lengthwise but do not cut all the way through so they hold together as a pocket for the sausage.
Cooking
- 3
Bring water to a boil in a pot, reduce to a gentle simmer and add the sausages. Heat them slowly for 5-7 minutes so they do not split.
- 4
Melt a knob of butter in a pan and briefly toast the split buns cut-side down until golden, 1-2 minutes.
- 5
Place the hot sausage into the toasted bun, add a slice of cheddar and cover the pan with a lid for 1 minute to let the cheese gently melt.
Serving
- 6
Sprinkle the hot dogs with chopped onion, optionally add pickled cucumber slices and season with ketchup or mustard to taste.
- 7
Serve immediately and sprinkle with chopped chives for a fresh colour and aroma.
More tips:
Warm the sausages only in hot, not rapidly boiling water so they do not split. Cheddar can be replaced with gouda or edam to taste.
Serve the hot dog straight after assembling, otherwise the bun goes soggy and loses its crunch. If making several at once, keep the sausages warm in hot water and assemble the hot dogs one by one.
