Peel and finely chop the onion. Slice the pickle into thin rounds.

Slit the buns lengthwise, but not all the way through, so they hold their shape when filled.

Pour water into a pot and bring it to a boil.
Cooking

Bring the water to a boil. Reduce to a gentle simmer, add the sausages, and heat for 4-5 minutes. do not boil vigorously to prevent splitting.

Meanwhile, heat a pan dry and briefly toast the cut sides of the buns for 30-60 seconds until lightly browned.
TIP:Toast only the cut sides of the bun on a dry pan for 30-60 seconds, until lightly browned. Do not add any fat. They will have a crispy surface and the sausage will stay on them better.
Serving

Place the hot sausage into the warm bun, add the chopped onion and pickle slices.

Season with ketchup and mustard to taste and serve immediately.
More tips:
Do not boil the sausages in rolling water. a gentle simmer is enough to keep them juicy and prevent splitting.
