Step by step process

Preparation

  1. 1

Peel the onion and cut into thin half-rings. slice the pickles lengthwise.

  2. 2

Slice the hot dog buns lengthwise without cutting all the way through so they remain connected.

  3. 3

Prepare the vegetarian sausages, mustard, and ketchup for quick assembly.

Cooking

  1. 4

Heat a little sunflower oil in a pan and fry the onion over medium heat for 8-10 minutes until golden.

    TIP:

Slow sauté over low heat with occasional stirring. At the end, add a pinch of sugar and a little water or stock for deglazing, releasing the caramelized bits and developing a rich onion flavor.

  2. 5

Lightly season the onion with salt and pepper, stir, and push it to the edge of the pan to keep warm.

  3. 6

Place the vegetarian sausages in the center of the pan and brown them on all sides for 5-7 minutes to heat through and lightly brown.

  4. 7

Briefly toast the inside of the buns in a dry pan until lightly crisp, about 1-2 minutes.

    TIP:

Heat a dry skillet over medium heat and briefly toast the cut side of the bun down until it takes on a light golden color. For even browning, gently press it with a spatula and briefly toast the other side as well.

Serving

  1. 8

Place the grilled sausage into the warm bun, add a portion of the fried onions and slices of pickles.

  2. 9

Season with mustard and ketchup to taste and serve immediately while the buns are still crisp.

More tips:

Do not pierce the vegetarian sausages before frying. they will stay juicier.
