Step by step process

Preparation

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 200°C and line a baking tray with parchment paper.

  2. 2

Allow the butter to soften and spread it on the outer sides of all slices of sandwich bread.

    TIP:

Let the butter soften at room temperature and spread a thin, even layer over the entire surface of the toast slices. For extra crispness, you can use a mixture of butter and oil.

  3. 3

Spread the inner sides with full-fat mustard to taste.

  4. 4

On half of the slices, place a slice of Edam cheese, a slice of ham, then another slice of Edam.

  5. 5

Top with the remaining slice of bread, buttered side out, and press gently.

Baking

  1. 6

Transfer the toasts to the tray and bake for 10-12 minutes, until golden and crispy.

  2. 7

Carefully turn them halfway through baking so they brown evenly on both sides.

  3. 8

Remove the finished toasts, let them rest for 1 minute, and season with salt and pepper to taste if needed.

Serving

  1. 9

Cut the toasts into triangles and serve while still warm.

  2. 10

Serve with ketchup to taste or with a light green salad.

More tips:

For an extra-crispy crust, brush the toasts with a thin layer of butter after turning them halfway through baking.

Variation: add a thin slice of tomato or a few slices of pickled gherkin inside for freshness.
