Shirley Temple with Ginger Ale and Grenadine
Ingredients
Step by step process
Preparing the Glasses
- 1
Chill four tall highball or hurricane glasses in the freezer for at least 10 minutes, so the drink stays cold longer and the glasses develop a nice frost on the outside.
- 2
Prepare all ingredients within reach, chilled ginger ale, grenadine, freshly squeezed lime juice, ice and garnishes. The drink is assembled quickly right in the glass.
Mixing the Drink
- 3
Fill each chilled glass with ice cubes about two-thirds full, so the drink has a sufficiently cold base and the ice melts slowly.
- 4
Pour 10 ml of freshly squeezed lime juice into each glass, which adds a refreshing tartness and balances the sweetness of the grenadine.
- 5
Top up each glass with chilled ginger ale (about 200 ml per glass), pouring slowly along the side of the glass to minimize fizzing and preserve the carbonation.
- 6
Pour 15 ml of grenadine around the edge of each glass, due to its higher density it will sink to the bottom and create a beautiful gradient from red to golden. Do not stir, to keep the effect visible.
TIP:Layering in cocktails relies on density, heavier liquids settle at the bottom, lighter ones stay on top. Pour slowly without stirring to keep the layers with sharp boundaries. Proven effective for all colorful drinks.
Serving
- 7
Place a lime slice on the rim of each glass and drop a cocktail cherry into the drink, or skewer it on a cocktail pick and lean it against the rim.
- 8
Serve immediately with a straw and a small spoon, so the guest can gently stir the drink and decide on the intensity of sweetness themselves.
More tips:
For an adult version (Dirty Shirley), add 30 ml of vodka to each glass before topping with ginger ale, the drink gains a light alcoholic kick while retaining its signature sweet-fruity character.
