Christmas Punch with Rum and Fruit
Ingredients
Step by step process
Preparing the Fruit
- 1
Thoroughly wash the orange and lemon in hot water and pat dry to remove any wax from the skin.
- 2
Cut the orange into thicker rounds about 0.5 cm thick and the lemon into thin slices. Core the apple and cut it into small cubes or slices.
Making the Punch
- 3
Pour the red wine, orange juice, and apple juice into a large pot, add the cane sugar and honey, and stir well to combine.
- 4
Add the orange and lemon slices and apple pieces, then add the cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and allspice.
- 5
Heat over low heat for about 20-25 minutes, making sure the drink never comes to a boil (max. around 80 °C / 175 °F). Boiling would evaporate the alcohol and ruin the flavor.
- 6
Once the punch is well infused with the spices, remove the pot from the heat and stir in the dark rum. Cover and let rest for 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
Serving
- 7
Strain the punch through a sieve into a carafe, or ladle it directly into heatproof mugs or glasses.
- 8
Garnish each serving with a fresh orange slice and a cinnamon stick, and serve hot.
More tips:
For a children's version, omit the rum entirely and replace the wine with grape or cherry juice, the spices and citrus stay the same.
