Boulevardier with Bourbon and Italian Bitter Liqueur
Ingredients
Step by step process
Preparation
- 1
Chill four cocktail glasses in the freezer for at least 10 minutes so the drink stays cold when served.
- 2
Wash an orange and use a vegetable peeler to remove four long thin strips of peel without the white bitter pith.
TIP:Use a fine potato peeler and remove only a thin layer of orange zest. Avoid the white part. From the strips, gently squeeze the oils between your fingers, releasing the terpenes and intensifying the drink's aroma.
- 3
Fill a mixing glass or bowl with enough ice to properly surround the liquids while stirring.
Mixing
- 4
Into the mixing glass with ice, measure bourbon (180 ml), Italian bitter liqueur (120 ml), and sweet red vermouth (120 ml).
- 5
Stir with a long spoon for 20-30 seconds, until the mixture is noticeably chilled and only lightly diluted by the melting ice.
- 6
Strain through a sieve into the chilled glasses and divide evenly among the four cocktails.
Serving
- 7
Express the oils from each strip of orange peel over the surface of each cocktail, wipe the rim with the peel, and place the strip in as a garnish.
- 8
Serve immediately in the chilled glasses without ice.
More tips:
The 1.5:1:1 ratio (bourbon: Italian bitter liqueur: sweet red vermouth) is classic. for a drier cocktail, slightly reduce the vermouth or add a drop of water while stirring.
Store opened sweet red vermouth in the refrigerator and use within 4-6 weeks. fresh vermouth will noticeably improve the cocktail's flavor.
