Step by step process

Chilling the glasses and ice

  1. 1

Chill four cocktail glasses in the freezer and prepare plenty of fresh ice for stirring and serving.

  2. 2

Have a jigger, a strainer, and a mixing glass ready. Use a peeler to cut a long strip of orange peel if desired.

Stirring over ice

  1. 3

Build the Manhattan: fill the mixing glass with ice, pour in the rye whiskey, add the sweet vermouth and Angostura bitters.

  2. 4

Stir with a bar spoon for about 20 to 30 seconds, until the cocktail is well chilled and slightly diluted.

Pouring and garnishing

  1. 5

Strain the contents through a strainer into the chilled cocktail glasses without ice.

  2. 6

Garnish with a cocktail cherry. Optionally, express the oils from the orange peel over the surface, wipe the glass rim, and discard or drop the peel into the drink.

More tips:

For a drier profile, reduce the vermouth to 25 ml per cocktail (100 ml total) and always stir with fresh ice so the dilution stays clean and controlled.

A Manhattan shines in the right glass: use a classic cocktail coupe or martini glass, always chilled for at least 10 minutes in the freezer.
