White Russian

White Russian comes together as a classic cocktail of vodka, coffee liqueur, and cream served over ice in a lowball glass. You fill the glass with ice cubes, measure 25 ml coffee liqueur and 50 ml vodka, and stir briefly. You slowly layer lightly whisked cream over the back of a spoon so a velvety white layer forms on top. You serve it right away with a silky, creamy taste and coffee notes, an ideal after-dinner drink.

Step by step process

Preparation

  1. 1

Chill the cream and lightly whisk it in a bowl with a whisk or spoon until slightly thicker but still pourable. Prepare 4 lowball (Old Fashioned) glasses and fill them to the rim with ice cubes. These prepared glasses are the foundation for a well-made white russian.

Mixing the cocktail

  1. 2

Measure 25 ml coffee liqueur and 50 ml vodka into each glass. Stir briefly with a bar spoon to combine the spirits and chill them. This combination delivers the bold, gently sweet coffee flavour with the smooth body of vodka. The ratio of vodka to coffee liqueur is the key to the drink's balance.

  2. 3

Slowly pour the prepared cream over the top of the cocktail, spoonful by spoonful. Pour over the back of a spoon so a velvety white layer forms on top - that signature layered look of a creamy cocktail.

Serving

  1. 4

Serve immediately. Offer guests the option to gently stir the cocktail to taste before drinking. Leaving it unstirred preserves the contrast between the dark lower layer and the pale cream on top.

More tips:

For more pronounced layering, pour very cold cream over the back of a spoon. For a lighter version, use cooking cream or whole milk.

Large clear ice cubes melt more slowly and dilute the cocktail less.
