Mulled Wine with Orange
Ingredients
Step by step process
Preparation
- 1
Thoroughly wash the orange, cut half into thin slices and squeeze the juice from the other half.
Cooking
- 2
Pour the red wine into a saucepan and add the orange slices, orange juice, granulated sugar, cloves and cinnamon.
- 3
Heat the mixture over low heat for about 10 to 15 minutes just below the boiling point, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is completely dissolved.
TIP:Heat mulled wine only over low heat, just below the boiling point. Once it is hot and starts to steam slightly, do not continue boiling it, so the wine retains its flavor, aroma, and some of its alcohol.
- 4
Once the drink is hot and richly fragrant with spices, remove the saucepan from the heat and let the mulled wine rest for 2 minutes.
Serving
- 5
Strain the mulled wine into mugs or thick-walled glasses and add a piece of warmed orange from the saucepan to each serving.
More tips:
Do not let the mulled wine come to a full boil, otherwise it will lose some of the alcohol and the more delicate spice aromas.
For a more pronounced citrus flavor, peel just a thin layer of zest from the orange before slicing, leaving behind the white bitter pith.
