French Toast with Strawberries

Karel ČernýSweetFrench Cuisine x se líbilo
French toast with strawberries is the kind of breakfast you keep coming back to: bread soaked in an egg mixture, fried until golden and crisp, then topped with fresh strawberries. A dusting of powdered sugar or a drizzle of maple syrup seals the deal.

Step by step process

Preparation

  1. 1

Wash and dry the strawberries, then slice or halve them - fresh, ripe ones work best on French toast. Set aside.

  2. 2

Crack the eggs into a bowl, add the milk, then stir in the sugar, cinnamon, salt, and, if using, vanilla sugar.

  3. 3

Whisk the mixture until smooth so the sugar dissolves and the spices are evenly distributed.

  4. 4

Dip each slice of sandwich bread, one at a time, on both sides for about 20-30 seconds to soak.

Frying

  1. 5

Melt the butter in a pan over medium heat so the surface is evenly coated.

  2. 6

Place the soaked slices in the pan and fry them 2-3 minutes on each side until golden and crisp.

  3. 7

Transfer the cooked toasts to a plate and keep them warm while you finish the rest.

Serving

  1. 8

Top each toast with a portion of the sliced strawberries. You can gently press them to release some juice.

  2. 9

If desired, dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with maple syrup.

  3. 10

Serve immediately while the toasts are warm and crispy.

More tips:

Use day-old sandwich bread - it soaks up the egg mixture better and holds its shape when frying.

Mix butter with a splash of oil when frying - the oil prevents burning while the butter adds rich flavour.
