Tuna spread with cream cheese
Ingredients
Step by step process
Make the mixture
- 1
For the tuna spread, first drain both cans of tuna thoroughly so no excess liquid stays in the fish. Transfer the fish to a bowl and mash it finely with a fork.
- 2
Add the cream cheese to the fish and stir both together with a fork or spoon into a smooth, spreadable mixture. If you like the mixture completely smooth, you can briefly whip it with a hand mixer. For a chunkier texture with noticeable pieces of fish, a regular fork is enough.
Season and serve
- 3
Peel the red onion and cut it into the finest possible dice. Finely chop the capers and pickles, then stir both into the mixture.
- 4
Squeeze in the juice of half a lemon, season with freshly ground pepper and a pinch of salt. Stir briefly and adjust the acidity and saltiness to taste.
- 5
Let the finished mixture chill. Fifteen minutes in the fridge is enough for the flavors to come together, then spread it on fresh bread and garnish with onion rings or a sprig of chives.
More tips:
Instead of cream cheese you can use softened butter, which makes the spread richer and firmer.
If you like a bolder flavor, add a teaspoon of Dijon mustard or a pinch of chopped dill.
