Penne, tube-shaped pasta

Penne are one of the most popular Italian pasta shapes. Their distinctive tube shape with diagonal ends resembles a quill pen tip (penna means pen in Italian), hence the name.

The most common type is penne rigate (ridged), which captures sauce better. The most classic dish is penne all'arrabbiata (with spicy tomato sauce). They are also excellent in baked pasta dishes.
