Spaghetti Bolognese for Kids

Spaghetti bolognese for kids is a quick dinner you can put together in half an hour. A mild tomato sauce with ground beef and hidden carrot wins over even fussy eaters. The meat simmers only briefly, so the pasta is ready in no time. Just sprinkle with parmesan and dinner is served.

Step by step process

Bolognese sauce

  1. 1

Preparation of spaghetti bolognese for kids begins with the sauce. Finely chop the onion and carrot, and press the garlic.

  2. 2

Heat the olive oil in a pan and saute the onion and carrot until soft, about 4 minutes.

    TIP:

Cook the onions over low heat only until they soften and turn translucent, not brown. This creates a delicate, slightly sweet base that works well in sauces, soups, and meat dishes.

  3. 3

Add the ground beef and fry, stirring, until browned and broken into small pieces.

    TIP:

Brown ground meat in smaller batches over higher heat so it doesn't steam in its own juices. Let it sear briefly without stirring first, then break it up into smaller pieces.

  4. 4

Stir in the pressed garlic and tomato paste, after a minute pour in the peeled tomatoes and crush them with a wooden spoon.

  5. 5

Season the sauce with salt, a pinch of sugar and oregano. Simmer over low heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Spaghetti and serving

  1. 6

Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the spaghetti until al dente according to the package instructions.

  2. 7

Drain the cooked pasta and return it to the pot.

  3. 8

Toss the spaghetti with part of the sauce so it coats well, then spoon the rest of the sauce on top.

  4. 9

Sprinkle the finished spaghetti with grated parmesan and garnish with fresh basil leaves.

More tips:

Grate the carrot finely if your kids don't like vegetables in the sauce. It melts away during simmering and gently sweetens the sauce.

You can make a double batch of sauce and freeze half. The next dinner then takes only as long as it takes to cook the spaghetti.
