Utopenci - a Czech beer snack classic
Utopenci are a traditional Czech cold dish made from pickled sausages in a spiced vinegar brine. The brine is prepared from vinegar, water, sugar, salt, and spices such as black pepper, allspice, bay leaves, and mustard seeds. Sliced onions, peppers, and chili peppers are added to the jars. The sausages are left to pickle for at least three days in the refrigerator. Utopenci are an essential beer snack and a staple of Czech pubs, summer barbecues, and picnics.
- The name utopenci comes from the fact that sausages are completely submerged or drowned in the brine.
- The ideal pickling time for utopenci is at least 3-5 days, but preferably a week.
- An annual competition for the best utopenci in Czechia is held in Olomouc.
- Quality utopenci are made from sausages with a higher meat content, not cheap franks.
