Surimi sticks - popular crab sticks
Surimi sticks, known as crab sticks, are one of the most widespread products made from surimi paste. They are produced from white fish processed into a fine mass, flavored with crab extract, colored with food coloring, and shaped into a characteristic elongated form. The surface is orange-red, the interior white and fibrous. They are popular in salad bowls, sushi rolls, and cold spreads. They are an affordable alternative to real crab meat.
- Surimi sticks were invented in Japan in 1974 and quickly spread around the world.
- Despite being called crab sticks, they contain no actual crab meat.
- One average surimi stick contains approximately 30 calories and 6 grams of protein.
- Japan consumes the most surimi sticks in the world, approximately 600 thousand tons annually.
