Soft drinks encompass a wide category of non-alcoholic beverages, most of which are carbonated with carbon dioxide. The most well-known include colas, lemonades, and tonics. Their history dates back to the 18th century. Today, soft drinks are used not only for direct consumption but also as ingredients in mixed drinks and cocktails.
- The first artificially carbonated water was produced in 1767 by Joseph Priestley.
- The term soft drinks was coined as the opposite of hard drinks.
- Cola originally contained extract from kola nuts and coca leaves.
- Tonic water was developed as a malaria treatment due to its quinine content.
