Sekt - Central European sparkling wine
Sekt is a sparkling wine with a long tradition in Central Europe. It is most commonly produced using the tank method (Charmat), where secondary fermentation takes place in large tanks. Higher-quality sekts are made using the traditional method with bottle fermentation. A typical sekt has delicate effervescence, a fresh fruity aroma, and a slightly tart taste. It is used as an aperitif, for toasts at celebrations, or as a cocktail base. In cooking, it enriches sauces and desserts.
- Sekt is predominantly produced using the Charmat tank method, which is faster than the traditional method.
- The tradition of sekt production in Central Europe dates back to the 19th century.
- The finest sekts mature in the bottle for at least 9 months on lees.
- Sekt is served chilled to 6-8 °C in tall, slender glasses.
