Salsa - Mexican sauce
Salsa is a traditional Mexican sauce made from raw or cooked tomatoes, chili peppers, onion, cilantro, and lime. There are many varieties from mild salsa roja to green salsa verde made with tomatillos. It is served with nachos, tacos, and other Mexican dishes.
- The word salsa comes from Spanish and simply means sauce.
- Aztecs were making salsa from tomatoes and chili peppers before the arrival of Europeans.
- Salsa overtook ketchup as the best-selling condiment in the US in 1991.
- There are dozens of types of salsa, from mild pico de gallo to extremely hot salsa habanero.
