Pretzel - traditional German Brezel (Brezel)

Pretzel or Brezel is an iconic German bread with a loop shape. The dough is dipped in a lye bath which gives it a brown colour and distinctive flavour. The surface is sprinkled with coarse salt.

In Bavaria it is part of breakfast with white sausage and sweet mustard. Pretzels are a popular accompaniment to beer at Oktoberfest and are sold in bakeries throughout Germany.
