Kare Raisu - Japanese curry
Kare raisu is Japanese curry with rice. British sailors brought Indian curry to Japan during the Meiji era, and the Japanese transformed it into a thick, mildly sweet sauce with gentle spicing.
The base consists of onion, carrot, and potato with meat. Most Japanese use ready-made curry blocks (roux). It is often served with a tonkatsu cutlet.
- Japanese curry was brought by British sailors from India at the end of the 19th century
- Unlike Indian curry the Japanese version is sweeter, thicker, and less spicy
- It ranks alongside ramen and gyudon as one of the three most popular dishes in Japan
- The Japanese Navy still serves curry every Friday as a tradition
