Döner kebab (from Turkish dönmek, to turn) is one of the most widespread dishes in the world. Slices of meat are stacked on a vertical spit and carved into thin slices as they roast.
In Turkey it is prepared from lamb, veal, or chicken and served in pide or lavash bread with tomatoes, onions, lettuce, and sauce. In Europe it is popular as a sandwich or a dürüm wrap.
Turkish döner is the forerunner of Greek gyros and Arabic shawarma. They differ in the type of meat, spices, and way of serving.
