Croque-Monsieur, French Toasted Sandwich

Croque-monsieur is an iconic French sandwich that first appeared in Parisian cafés around 1910. Two slices of bread are layered with ham and Gruyère cheese, spread with béchamel sauce and toasted until golden.

The name literally means mister crunch. The version topped with a fried egg is called croque-madame. Today the croque-monsieur is a staple on the menu of every Parisian café and brasserie.
