Bánh bao - Vietnamese steamed buns

Bánh bao are Vietnamese steamed buns with roots in Chinese cuisine (baozi). A fluffy yeasted dough made from wheat flour wraps a filling of pork, boiled egg, Chinese mushrooms, and glass noodles.

The buns are cooked in a bamboo steamer, which keeps them soft and pillowy. In Vietnam they are sold on every street corner as a popular morning snack or quick grab-and-go meal. Sweet versions filled with bean paste or coconut filling also exist.
