American Pizza - New York and Chicago style

American pizza differs from the Italian original primarily with more generous toppings and thicker crust. The two main American styles are New York pizza with thin, foldable crust and large triangular slices, and Chicago deep-dish pizza with high edges resembling a pie. Italian immigrants brought pizza to the USA at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and Americans transformed it into a dish with dozens of varieties from Hawaiian to stuffed-crust pizza.

American Pizza - New York and Chicago style
  • The first American pizzeria, Lombardi's, opened in New York City in 1905.
  • Chicago deep-dish pizza has dough pressed high along the edges of the pan with sauce on top, not under the cheese.
  • Americans consume approximately 3 billion pizzas annually, about 23 kilograms per person.
  • New York pizza is traditionally eaten folded in half so it can be comfortably eaten while walking.
