Açaí, dark berries of the Amazon palm
Açaí (pronounced ah-sah-EE) are small dark-purple to almost black berries of the South American palm Euterpe oleracea. They are a staple food in the Amazon and a celebrated superfood rich in anthocyanins.
- The fruit comes from the Amazonian palm Euterpe oleracea, especially in Brazils Pará state.
- Only the thin pulp around the large seed is edible. it is rich in fat, anthocyanins, and polyphenols.
- Due to its short shelf life it is exported as frozen pulp, freeze-dried powder, or pressed juice.
- The classic Brazilian açaí na tigela bowl is served with banana, granola, and guaraná.
