Absinthe is a powerful herbal spirit with a pronounced anise and wormwood profile, usually 45 to 74% ABV. It originated in 18th-century Switzerland and conquered the Parisian bistros in the 19th. its nickname is the green fairy.
- Originated in late 18th-century Couvet, Switzerland, and contains 45-74% alcohol.
- Its dominant aromatics are wormwood (Artemisia absinthium), anise, and fennel.
- The traditional la louche service: iced water dripped onto a sugar cube creates a milky louche.
- Due to the thujone myth it was banned between 1910 and 1915, and re-legalised only after 1990.
